Water is not just a resource — it is the essence of life. In arid and semi-arid regions of Rajasthan and Gujarat, communities often struggle to access clean and sufficient water. Dhara Sansthan’s Natural Resource Management (NRM) initiative focuses on revitalizing traditional water bodies, promoting sustainable usage, and fostering community ownership to ensure water security for generations to come.
Our work begins with identifying water-stressed areas. Through topographical surveys and community consultations, we assess the availability and usage of water sources. Then, we initiate interventions like rainwater harvesting systems, check dams, and recharge wells. These not only conserve water but also replenish groundwater levels.
We prioritize reviving traditional water structures — such as stepwells (baoris), ponds (talabs), and johads — which have historically sustained rural life. Our desilting and restoration efforts breathe new life into these sources, making water available for agriculture and daily use even during dry months.
But conservation is incomplete without participation. That’s why Dhara Sansthan mobilizes local Water User Groups (WUGs) comprising farmers, women, and youth. These groups take responsibility for maintaining water bodies, ensuring fair distribution, and resolving disputes. We also train them on water budgeting and micro-irrigation techniques.
Agriculture being the primary livelihood, we help farmers adopt drip and sprinkler systems, and encourage crop diversification to reduce water dependency. The results have been transformative — improved crop yields, reduced migration, and greater food security.
Water literacy is an equally vital part of our mission. From school children to farmers, we conduct awareness programs that foster a culture of conservation. Competitions, wall paintings, and village events reinforce the message.
Through the convergence of traditional wisdom, community ownership, and technical knowledge, Dhara Sansthan is helping villages take charge of their water future — one drop at a time.
